Emergency Multi-Sectoral Response for Drought- and Conflict-Affected Communities in Gubadley and Bal’ad Districts, Somalia (2025)

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) – Respone 2025

In 2025, SOHDA Somalia, through a multisectoral humanitarian response project funded by LM International, successfully constructed 10 emergency latrines across five internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Gubadley District, Banadir Region, Somalia.

The intervention was implemented to address critical sanitation gaps affecting drought-displaced populations living in overcrowded settlements with limited access to safe hygiene facilities. A total of 1,185 vulnerable individuals, including women, children, elderly persons, and persons with disabilities, directly benefited from improved access to safe and dignified sanitation services.

The construction of the emergency latrines significantly contributed to reducing open defecation practices, improving environmental hygiene conditions and mitigating the risk of waterborne diseases and public health outbreaks within the targeted camps. The intervention also enhanced privacy, safet and dignity for displaced women and girls, particularly during nighttime use.

This WASH activity formed part of SOHDA’s integrated multisectoral humanitarian response aimed at strengthening community health, protection, and resilience among vulnerable IDP households in Gubadley District.
